Summer Sale reaches $5.38 million!
The largest grossing company auction,
second only to the McCleery auction held
jointly with Sotheby's!
Portsmouth New Hampshire – With nearly 150 collectors in attendance and over 1000 watching worldwide, the Summer 2023 Guyette and Deeter auction was an offering not to be missed. With an appealing mix of waterfowl decoys, fine American art, quality American folk art, marine and sporting paintings, there were items for many interests.
The top lot and the highest price for a painting in the sale was an oil on canvas by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) for $480,000. Selling just a few lots later was a watercolor portrait of Charles Savage Homer Jr by Winslow Homer (1836-1910) for $360,000.
A great selection of quality American folk art was offered with the highest price of $144,000 achieved for a Henry Gudgell carved walking stick. $72,000 was the high mark for a 'leaner' cigar store trade figure by Thomas Brooks (1828-1895).
A very nice selection of quality decoys from the longtime collection of Russ and Karen Goldberger were offered with five lots from the collection bringing over $100,000. A beaver tail style pintail by the Ward Brothers was $120,000, an early rigmate pair of mergansers by Elmer Crowell, a rare ruddy turnstone by John Dilley , and the only know feeding dowitcher by Obediah Verity all reached $108,000. A plump, carved-wing, running plover by Elmer Crowell was the deal of the auction at $102,000.
20 items sold for over $50,000 and 107 brought $10,000 or more.
Josh Loewensteiner and Mary Tumbleson served as auctioneers.
Our next auction will be a Fine Sporting Arms sale September 11 and 12 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The next Decoy and Sporting Art auction will feature the Dave Fannon collection and will take place on November 11 & 12 at the Country School, Easton, Maryland. Quality consignments are wanted for this auction and are being considered until Monday, September 4th.
