St. Michaels, Maryland – Strong enthusiasm sparks solid results for the Guyette and Deeter's Fall Fine Sporting Arms Auction. Dubbed the firm’s “most balanced” sale to date offering a vast array of fine sporting arms across all genres of shooting, collecting, and investment grade material. The sale was highly anticipated as it has become increasingly known as a barometer for the health of the Sporting Arms market and the sale results show the market is very healthy with many enthusiastic new and seasoned buyers.
The top lot to cross the block was a stunning pair of W.W. Greener Shotguns made in .32 bore. The guns are featured on the cover of Douglas Tate’s Book on Birmingham Gun Makers. The pair along with their case carried a presale estimate of $65,000-$95,000 and landed comfortably at $87,000. Other Fine English Sporting Shotguns showed strength as well including a beautiful 28 bore Peter Chapman which sold at $45,000, and a fine 410 E.J. Churchill .410 bore with its original case made $14,400 against a high estimate of $14,000.
Guyette and Deeter continues to provide a strong marketplace in fine American Sporting Arms and this sale yielded consistently strong results. Among the top sellers were a Parker AAH Grade which was fresh to market and was of particular interest to collectors with its factory gold inlaid grip cap “Old Hoss” , it realized $48,000. A very rare Parker AHE 12ga made a record for the grade and gauge at $45,600 against an estimate of $20-30,000. A very rare Parker Lifter “$250 Grade” gun brought in $8700 against a $5500 high estimate. A gorgeous pair A.H. Fox Shotguns in “XE” Grade both topped their high estimates realizing $70,200 against a $62,500 high estimate for the pair. There were a number of beautiful Lefever Arms Co. Guns including what was cataloged as “The Finest Known” F Grade in 16ga. The gun realized $12,000 against its presale estimate of $5000-$8,000. One of the more "high art" American Doubles in the Auction was an exceptionally rare Ithaca “Sousa Grade” Single barrel trap which represented the finest qualities from the maker and realized $30,000 which was very near the top end of its estimate.
The firm has developed an internationally renowned reputation for honesty and fair dealing and was entrusted by a West Coast Family to sell a prized Patek Philippe watch. The maker is known as one of the most recognized and highly prized makers in the world. The watch carried a presale estimate of $30-$40,000 and realized $54,000!
Other areas of specialty for the firm are fine Kentucky Rifles and antique Fowling Arms. The sale included a very rare swivel breech rifle by Adam Angstadt of Berks County, PA. The gun remained in its original flintlock configuration making it an even further extreme rarity. It realized $30,000.
Guyette and Deeter’s Fine porting Arms Auctions always carry a number of wonderful sporting paintings, and this sale was led by a magnificent Harry Curieux Adamson of blue wing teal which made $36,000 against a high estimate of $25,000. A beautiful Lynn Bogue Hunt painting of quail sold for $26,400 just above its mid-estimate.
Division Head and Lead Auctioneer, Josh Loewensteiner commented on the sale saying “there continues to be a growing crop of buyers and investors for best quality sporting arms and ephemera. Our firm is very deeply trusted, and that trust gives the market the greatest level of confidence in our catalogs and the descriptions that are written for each item. That translates into better results for our buyers and our consignors alike!”
G&D’s next Fine Sporting Arms Sale will be February 22, 2024. The firm is pleased to announce the consignment of The Jerry Smith Estate Collection as part of this exciting sale. Jerry was a renowned Maryland dealer and Parker collector for many many years.
